Larry Pollock - The Renaissance Man

Larry Pollock

OK, I admit it. It’s a problem having so many interests. I need 9 lives to even get a good start on all the interesting stuff!

Childhood

Growing up in California I had the classic “Leave it to Beaver” home and up bringing. Not much to complain about there. I was able to compete in AAU swimming, take up surfing at 11 years old, snow skiing by the time I was 14 (Lake Tahoe trips) and backpacking in the high Sierra’s for weeks at a time. I spent a lot of time trout fishing on high mountain streams when we weren’t hiking to the next camp.

Like my Grandfather before me, photography interested me. He was part of the Kodachrome Society in Los Angeles. My dad lent me his nice Kodak Signet 35mm camera at times to allow me to learn. In those days it was all film so you were careful about what shots you took.

High School seemed to last forever. I loved it mostly. Well, English classes were not my favorite… But math and science were great. I participated in the first of it’s kind High School class in Calculus. 12 of us started the year, 4 of us finished it. I got an A. A little secret: just do the algebra even if you don’t understand the concepts in Calculus yet. At least I got the math right!

I made the Junior Varsity Basketball Team. My job? Writing statistics during the game. OK, I got to play at times too. My bench warming buddy Greg and I got to win a game once. Our moment in the sun! I also played on the Varsity Team the next year. I was a better swimmer, and in particular, a springboard diver. I was good at it and garnered many points for our team at swim meets. I even made it to the Central California Finals.

Of course by the time I was 18 and leaving High School I had other interests. High on the list was Surfing which my buddies, Kit and Mark, as well as me spent all day doing if we could. I was good at that to. Go figure, more water to swim in. Girls and beer surfaced in the mix too. High School quickly faded as the big event in my life. I continued to snow ski and backpack.

I even did 2 years of Junior College. Not my thing! So I decided to quit for a while, got a job at night working in a pizza place cooking and whatever it took to make the meager $1.85 per hour. Of course, gas for my 64 VW Beatle was only 25 cents per gallon and $2 bucks would fill her up for the week. Surfing all day, no school and working nights along with chasing about with my buddies was a good life at 20.

My lifestyle was not one my dad approved of. I was still rooming at home. We eventually butted heads on the subject and I moved out virtually overnight. It was both a low point due to family but a new beginning for me. I found a room at a friends house and continued my lifestyle.

Marriage & Kids

King Salmon

It was about this time I met my first wife, Jan. It wasn’t long until we were married. Her folks moved to an island in Alaska about 15 miles south of Sitka. Little did I know we would move there too within a year. We had to escape the parties and same old same old. In Alaska I got to dive into fish buying, grading salmon, catching salmon and halibut, hunting, boat building and starting a family. My two kids, one boy and one girl, were both born within 18 months of each other. My wife and I were now earning around $8/hr and thought we had it made. But young love does not always last… We grew apart as we neared 30 years old. Well, I was nearing it.

Divorce

When we split up I thought my life was over. There was nothing left to get excited about in the world. I didn’t really know my own mind and what I wanted to do. As painful as that time was it was also the seed that open door to the next 26 years. Needless to say, I found I was full of things I liked and wanted to do. I think the same was true for Jan. It took a few years to start finding the nuggets. But I did.

New Life

The next 5 years were amazing (for the most part). I sailed a 36 foot sailboat I got in Ketchikan to Sitka by myself. I had several radio shows on the local NPR Public Radio Station. I even played guitar and flute in a band at a local coffee shop and sometimes at events. I moved to California again to work for my dad in his construction company. Eventually I started to be the Foreman on some jobs. Surfing at 5:30 am before work kept me in shape. But soon I was off on a new adventure to live in Washington State with a new lady. That was very short lived. In retrospect it set me up to be in the right place at the right time to meet Faith Barnard. We met in October of 1989. By September of 1990 we were a permanent item. It’s been 20 years now and we are often asked when we got married? They think it was recently!

The Dream

Faith and I had dreams and we started working on them right way. Marketing and home based business was right up our alley. All we needed was the right company at the right time. We kept being on the Bleeding Edge when what we wanted and needed was the Leading Edge. We have always done very well but finally started to hit our stride 8 years ago. We moved from Seattle to Sedona in 2007. We both work from home and love every minute of it (well, almost).

The Dream Coming to Life

Living in the Arizona mountains with beautiful views, lots of wildlife and a great home is just the beginning. Everything we have done in the past is now helping us to create our Brand online. We love to teach and share what we know. Helping others to realize their potential and find their niche. Everyone has something to give to the world and share with others. The more we live our passion the more fun and happy our lives are. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith to get there. For those who do, life takes on a whole new light and meaning.

We are working together, me with my technical skills and marketing, Faith with her marketing and social skills, to build the Larry Pollock and Faith Barnard Brands online. Social Media has become part of our life. We have things we want to share and offer via this channel to the world. And that is it, the world is available through our Mac computers. The people we are meeting are amazing. The tip of the iceberg is all we have seen in this new way to build knowledge and income buy sharing and being part of a larger community. Yes, we still get out and meet people. Connecting in person with locals, or people we have met online, or when we travel. Ultimately this is how long term relationships and partnerships are created. Ones that can last a lifetime and benefit all parties.

I’m a dreamer! I see all the possibilities. If I can’t dream I can’t create it. It’s just my nature to be optimistic. I have learned to focus and I know I can’t do everything. I do a lot and will always be busy. I don’t believe in retirement, just being able to do what you want when you want. Being interested in things and active keeps the body, mind and spirit alive, awake and enthusiastic.

Wrapping Up

Through the years and all the things I have done, experimented with, learned and been involved with I have aquaired the knowledge to be considered The Renaissance Man. I’m an interesting mix if hippy, yuppie, surfer dude, mac geek, and artist. I do photography, play guitar, teach Mac computers, write books on WordPress and mac software, golf, surf, ski, hike and much more.

I hope you will come along for the ride and join in the conversations.
